How to Soothe a Sore Situation

Sore throats are common and often occur from everyday activities. But what else causes them? And what can you do to treat them? Here are some facts everyone should know.

Common causes:

  • Breathing through the mouth
  • Breathing dry air or smoke
  • Straining the voice
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages
  • Eating spicy foods
  • Common cold
  • Flu
  • Allergies
  • Strep throat
  • Certain other medical conditions

Caring for a sore throat at home:

  • Soothe your throat with throat drops or lozenges
  • Drink plenty of liquids (try warm tea with honey)
  • Gargle with salt water
  • Use a humidifier or steamer
  • Avoid talking
  • Avoid smoking, alcoholic beverages and spicy foods

See a doctor if there is:

See a doctor if you have a severe sore throat that persists for more than two days.

Or if you have the following symptoms;

  • a fever (over 101°)
  • difficulty breathing
  • swallowing or opening the mouth
  • rash
  • ear ache
  • joint pain
  • nausea or vomiting
  • blood in saliva
  • tender or swollen glands in the neck
